Ian's Story

Ian

Ian

As a football player and track athlete in high school, Ian says that he was able to do all of his workouts in sports, but walking up a flight of steps the next day in class was another story. He began seeing a paediatric cardiologist when he was 17 years old and found out that he had a heart murmur at the time and mitral valve prolapse. His hypertrophic cardiomyopathy continued to present itself over the following years.

After receiving his implantable defibrillator, Ian says he adjusted some of his exercise routines, but he also went from being a small golfer to a much bigger golfer. "It has not taken away from my ability to continue my pursuit of golf perfection." Ian also jogs and lifts weights, and he loves to play pool.

Ian has experienced therapy shocks from his implantable defibrillator and says while he did have some anxiety about shocks, "really for me, it was more just time and trying to get back to the things that I did and to realize that the device was in there for a reason. And it wasn't to slow me down. It wasn't to impede my life. It was to give me life and it was in there to help me in case anything was wrong."

Ian says he had to learn to move on with his life while being careful about what he ate and drank and how he exercised. He shares that a device helps you to continue living and it’s there to rescue you should you have an arrhythmic event that you need to be rescued from. "It's there for a reason and you should go about life as your physician instructs you to because the device is there to protect you."

When asked if he would recommend an implantable heart device to others, Ian says, "Absolutely. If a patient has an indication to receive a device, I would recommend it just because I can speak firsthand that I might not be here without it. And I'm sure that there's going to be anxiety associated with anyone to receive a device like this. But if the doctors are talking to them about this device and recommending it, then they're most likely recommending it for a reason and that the patients will probably thank the doctor and the people even at Medtronic at some point in their lives for moving forward with implanting of the device."
