Medtronic is the global leader in medical technology, alleviating pain, restoring health and extending life for millions of people around the world. With deep roots in the treatment of heart disease, Medtronic now provides a wide range of products and therapies - every three seconds, somewhere in the world, another life is improved by a Medtronic product or therapy.
The company was founded in 1949 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, by Earl E. Bakken and Palmer J. Hermundslie. In the UK Medtronic has been based in Watford for over 35 years.
The UK office of Medtronic was opened in September 1972, moving to its current location in Croxley Green Business Park in 1987. As the company has grown the office has expanded within the business park, to its current location in Building 9, which includes state of the art facilities for the Bakken Education Centre.
The Bakken Education Centre for physician training was opened in 2001.
Medtronic's new offices have been designed to provide an energy efficient work space using innovative, state of the art technology to reduce our impact on the environment.
Some of the energy saving technologies include:
- New air conditioning technology which is reducing the power consumption of the Medtronic UK and Ireland Regional Headquarters by 50%.
- Rainwater harvesting systems (e.g. toilets use captured rainwater) which result in 50% less water being used.
- Intelligent self-adjusting lighting systems to reduce electricity consumption. The overhead lighting is controlled by occupancy and daylight detection systems.
- New eco power units which power down all accessories when employees CPU units are turned off.
- All employees recycle unwanted paper, cardboard, printer cartridges, plastic bottles and aluminium cans.
At Medtronic, we are committed to doing all that we can to reduce our carbon footprint.
Medtronic also occupies a spinal cleaning facility in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire.
Patient Advocacy and Support groups.
Medtronic is committed to supporting the work of Patient Advocacy and Support groups. Many groups based in the UK have benefitted from the work of the Medtronic Foundation's Patient Link programme, which looks to enhance the capacity of charitable organisations.
Additionally an annual advocacy conference is hosted in Watford, and Medtronic staff provide ad hoc support for such activities as awareness weeks, fundraising events and policy consultation.

The solutions developed at Medtronic allow physicians to monitor and treat their patients' changing cardiac conditions throughout a lifetime. These developments include pacemakers to treat patients with bradycardia (too-slow heartbeat); implantable defibrillators to help patients with tachyarrhythmia (too-fast heartbeat); and diagnostic and monitoring innovations that diagnose heart-related syncope (unexplained fainting), just to name a few.
Neuromodulation offers innovative therapies for chronic pain, movement disorders, spasticity, overactive bladder and urinary retention and gastroparesis. Medtronic developed and leads the field of neuromodulation, the targeted and regulated delivery of electrical pulses and pharmaceuticals to specific sites in the nervous system.
Spinal and Biologics offers products that treat a variety of disorders of the cranium and spine, including traumatically induced conditions, deformities and tumours. Through the introduction of a substitute for iliac crest bone harvest and Minimal Access Spinal Technologies, the business has distinguished itself as a global leader in less-invasive surgical techniques. It also develops a variety of image-guided surgical navigation systems.
Diabetes offers insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring systems, related disposable products and diabetes management software, making Medtronic a world leader in diabetes management.
CardioVascular develops products that are used throughout the vascular system and those used for arrested and beating heart bypass surgery. The business markets the industry’s broadest line of heart valve products for replacement and repair, plus auto-transfusion equipment and disposable devices for handling and monitoring blood during major surgery, as well as cardiac ablation devices to treat a variety of heart conditions. The business also offers products and therapies that treat a wide range of vascular diseases and conditions. These products include coronary, peripheral and neurovascular stents, stent graft systems for diseases and conditions throughout the aorta, and distal protection systems.
